Tomer Sapir's Scleroderma, 2005
Scleroderma is a disease which symptoms include the hardening, tightening and thickening of the skin, of the internal organs and of the blood vessels.
In the center of this project stands the image of a sand castle, which is built on the beach. Sand castles are a proof that children are, undoubtedly, little architects. The imagination, the dedicated labor and the creativity that are involved in building this kind of castle, and the fear of the unavoidable moment in which the object will collapse – by itself or by external factor – imparts the sand castle a sentimental value.
In this work I've created didactic and a bit morbid instructions for making your own homemade “sand castle”. This castle is made of concrete. I was intrigued with the consequences of changing the material and the location's context, while keeping the basic configuration and the icon of the send castle. This change neutralized the magic and beauty that are an integral part of sand castles.
The Concrete Sand Castle was presented in a group exhibition in the Design Week in Tel-Aviv on January 2005.
